Hopper Drawings: 44 Works from the Permanent Collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art (Dover Art Library)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (May, 1989)
Author: Edward Hopper
Average review score:

Very excellent work
I own a lot of Dover art series books. They are excellent books for beginning artists in that they show how the old masters did their early works using different media. Much can be learned from the Dover art books in the use of subject, form, and shading. The Hopper Drawings is one of my favorite Dover art books. Most of the drawings in this book have been made using the Conte crayon. I prefer the Conte crayon over charcoal. It is very sleek, clean, and smooth. The drawings show how masterful Hopper is with the Conte crayon and much can learned by studying his drawings.

Indonesian Folk Motifs (Dover Design Library)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (March, 1998)
Author: Peter Linenthal
Average review score:

Very instructive with short description
Over 200 authentic motifs from Java, Bali, Irian Jaya, and etc., including Batik, Ikat, Wayang Kulit (shadow puppet), Topeng (masks) designs. Illustrations are all black and white, copyright-free. Each motif has a short description, such as "Rakshasa head gold earring motif, Java, 13th- 16th centuries." Usually this descriptions are quite short, just tells you where or what, still it's informative enough to show you the name of familiar motifs.

The language is very clear and easy to follow, it is written for a broad audience. I would personally recommend it for all how has an interest in the theory of optical aberrations.

Jabberwocky and Other Poems (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (June, 2001)
Author: Lewis Carroll
Average review score:

"'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves..."
"Jabberwocky and Other Poems," by Lewis Carroll, is an inspired collection by this remarkable writer. A brief note at the beginning of the book discusses the life and career of Carroll (1832-98), who was a mathematician as well as a poet. The selections in this book are taken from "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," "Through the Looking Glass," and other sources.

This collection shows Carroll's quirky, mischievous playfulness as well as his technical prowess with rhyme, meter, and wordplay. He is consistently inventive and often satirical. The book is very funny, often quite absurd, and has an occasional dark, sinister edge.

Just a few of the highlights are as follows. "The Mouse's Tale": a visual poem shaped like a mouse's tale. "Brother and Sister": a hilarious tribute to sibling rivalry that uses an interesting rhyme scheme. "The Walrus and the Carpenter": a sort of narrative horror-comedy with rich touches of absurdism. "Poeta Fit, non Nascitur": a hilarious satire on the art of writing poetry. And of course, the brilliant title poem, with its memorable opening: "'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves / Did gyre and gimble in the wabe."

Kate Greenaway Iron-On Transfer Patterns (Dover Needlework Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (July, 1990)
Author: Julie S. Hasler
Average review score:

Classic embroidery designs of children
These really hold up, and needleworkers will be rewarded, especially as redwork embroidery (for which these designs are perfect) is enjoying a renewed popularity these days. Interestingly, the Greenaway designs, although certainly sweet, aren't nearly as sugary as later ones that were based on her widespread & influential designs.

Authors: Dover Publications Inc and Listen & Learn
Average review score:

Learn French the easy way
This tape of "Listen and Learn French" was the ideal way to learn French while driving to and from work each day. After using this tape for 6 months, I was very prepared to travel around France on my own and converse with the locals. I also used Dover's tapes to learn Italian, German, and Spanish to prepare for visits to other parts of Europe and Mexico. I rate all these tapes a 5 Star A++++.
